Ugabe Txakoli - 2016
Txakoli is a slightly sparkling, dry white wine with high acidity and low alcohol content produced in the Spanish provinces of the Basque Country, Cantabria and northern Burgos.
Ugaitz Iturbe is chief wine maker at Ugabe Txakoli, a small 2 hectare vineyard located in the Biscayan municipality of Artea.
Accepted to the DO Bizkaiko Txakolina since 2016, this Txakoli is produced entirely by hand, a laborious process dedicated to enhance the quality of the wine. The small size of the vineyard allows Ugaitz to really nurture the fruit and to be very fastidious about grape selection.
Ugabe Txakoli is made using 80% Hondarrabi Zuri grape, a variety native to the Basque Country and in addition, to provide extra quality, the wine is blended with Chardonnay (10%) and Petit Courbu (10%), both French varieties also grown on vineyard.
Interestingly, this Txakoli is the aged on the lees, a procedure that helps to develop the colour and body, add complexity and to hold more time in the bottle.
Lovely pale yellow colour with hints of green and rich aromas of apple, grapefruit and pineapple, cloaked in a subtle floral perfume. Very fresh in the mouth with a well-integrated acidity and the full-bodied quality associated with this variety, enhanced by the ageing on the lees. Long, enveloping, aromatic and very persistent finish.
Annual production is only 8,000 bottles
